- Social Studies 5: We have given a real big challenge to the grade 5s. We have been investigating this inquiry questions: In what ways have the stories of immigrants shaped Canada? This week have explored different immigrant groups and using cause and effect relationships, studied why they came and what effect they had on Canada. At the Galt we were taught about the stories of Ukrainian, Chinese, and Japanese people. We learned about the detention camps that Ukrainians were sent to during World War I by Castle Mountain. We explored why a Japanese WWI veteran was sent to work the Sugar Beet fields during WWII. We also talked about the treatment of the Chinese immigrants that came to build the Rail Road. Topics included: Head Tax and danger pay. We also explored how the Scottish and Irish have influenced games and celebrations we have in Canada. Next week we will learn about the Underground Rail Way. We encourage students to explore more stories of immigrants both present and past!
- Math: We continue to practice our multiplication and use strategies to solve multiplication problems. In the later half of March we will be given a quiz on Multiplication and start our practice with division problems. Please continue to practice multiplication at home!
- Health: We celebrated Kindness (anti-bullying) day. We continue to develop an understanding of what good friendships look like and what happens when friendships are damage. We will also look at how to repair those friendships.
